Today at the beginning of class we will explore photoshop video a little further and finish the work we were doing in class yesterday. Your challenge is to try to find out to change the frame per second rate so make a clip in slow-motion or fast-motion. When you are done, be sure to add credits to your video (reminder you have to make a new layer and add text on it). Also, try playing with the fades, transitions, etc.
When you are done, export your video and save it. You can begin brainstorming ideas for your video below: (I do not have storyboard paper for you today, but you can use printer paper and fold it into 4 to make 8 squares. You will not start filming your video today.

Assignment Two: A Chase Sequence
In a group of 3 or 4, you will plan, film and edit (individually) a
short chase sequence to demonstrate matched action, and a variety of
shot types.
Your sequence must include:
- a variety of shot types: establishing (long), close-up, and medium shots
- between 6 - 12 shots
First, storyboard your plan (do this individually and submit to me before filming).
For each shot on your storyboard:
- sketch the scene
- identify the type of shot
- identify the angle of the shot (high, low, neutral)
Remember: No panning or zooming allowed - use a tripod for best results.
You do NOT need to work with the same group as before.

We will film a scene of someone going through a door way, they must open the door, walk through, and exit. For this, you should use your knowledge of a jump cut to make this a smooth transition. You will work in groups of 3.

Today we will spend 15 minutes finishing the work from yesterday and then we will move on to talk about videography. Before we can start shooting, we need to learn how to shoot so as a class we will watch the following videos:

After this you will work through the following videography tutorials at your own speed.Please click on "Editing". It might seem backwards to start with editing but it actually makes sense to work backwards with videography so you know what scenes you will need. Today we are going to take some time to explore Canadian Tech start-up companies. We will read 2 articles, the first from the Globe and Mail and the second from betakit.com
Part A:
Explore the following article from the Globe and Mail on promising Canadian internet Tech Startups.
This article describes six new companies and their products. Pick three that are interesting to you and answer the following question for EACH of your picks:
1. What is the name and location of this company?
2. Briefly describe the founder of the company. (e.g. How old are they? What education do they have? What did they do before they started this company?
3. What service/product does this company provide? Be sure to visit their website to get a solid idea - watch their promotional material, etc. In your opinion, how is there business a benefit to those who use it?

Today we will work at finishing your stop motion video, and then we will move on to illustrator as a group.
We will discuss what illustrator is, and what it can be used for. After this we will talk about the difference between vector and bitmaps graphics.
What are vectors?
In your own words on your blog:

2. What are the advantages of vector graphics?
After this video, I will give you a brief demonstration using the pen and pencil tool on illustrator. If you are finished your stop-motion video, you will practice drawing basic shapes in illustrator.

For the first part of today you will be finishing your audio in your iMovie videos. You may begin this as soon as you come to class.
During the second half of the class we ill begin our final project for Stop Motion. This video must be a narrative, and contain all of the aspects of a successful stop-motion video! The video must have a minimum of 300 photos (more is welcomed!) planned audio and effects. With your group, you will work on a proposal on google docs that you will share with me, and a storyboard. I will be placing your in groups for this project. You will Wednesday and Thursday's class to shoot and Friday to edit (keep in mind, Thursday is shortened classes).

At the beginning of class I will show a short youtube tutorial about adding audio tracks to a video in iMovie (including sound effects and voice overs). After this I will give you a demonstration in class on how to apply what we learned in the video, and how to fade/ duck our tracks.
We will also learn how to apply background music, and how to clip this in garage band before putting it into iMovie.
We will take our stop-motion videos from Thursday (you might have to reimport them if you don't have the original iMovie file but this should only take 5 minutes) and add audio to these. You must innclude background music, a sound effect (or 2) and a voice over. If you finish this before the end of class, try creating new file with new audio.
At the end of class I will collect the exported movie files on my USB.

Compile them as I demonstrated in class (adjusting the clip to 0.1 f/s, fit to crop). You are also required to have a slide and credits. If you finish early, try adding sound to your clip! If you finish everything today, you may start researching a potential career that you are interested in in the field of Communications Technology. On your blog, list 3 careers that interest you that relate to what we have been studying in class. Choose one and do the following:

What post-secondary programs are required for my field of study?
Are there any prerequesities to get into these programs?
Part 2:
Research 3 schools that offer this program. Where are these schools located and how long is the program? What is the annual tuition cost for the program? Are there additional fees (i.e. textbooks, softare, etc.) Do these schools offer residence? What is the cost of residence per year? I suggest writing a separate paragraph for each school.

Now research current job postings that would relate to your program of study. Try using monster.ca, workopolis.ca, jobbank.gc.ca, eluta.ca. Are there many positions available? What is an average starting salary for these jobs (less than 5 years of experience).

At the beginning of class today I would like you to finish up any photoshop projects you have from our final assignment from last week. You may take the first 20 minutes of class to do this.
Today we are going to start out unit on stop motion!! We will begin the class by looking at a few different examples. After this I will give you a demonstration on making a stop motion video and we will discuss criteria of successful videos. After this I'd like you to go to youtube and find an example of a stop motion video that interests you. At the end of class you will make your own mini video on photobooth.

For the first 15 minutes of class, I'd like you to post/finish any outstanding assignments (with the excpetion of the TedTalk). You will have no more time to work on your car or business card.
For the final project of the unit, you will complete 3 miniature assignments. I have shared the outline for these 3 assignments with you on google docs. It is your responsibility to use your time responsibly and complete these 3 assignments within the time frame. You may ask for some help, but I expect the majority of your work to be independent.

1Create a template with the right specifications. Open a new image in Photoshop and set the width and height to 3.75 and 2.25 inches respectively. Set the resolution to 200 pixels/inch or more. The final size of your card will be 3.5 x 2 inches but it is customary to include a 1/8th inch 'bleed area' all around, hence the slightly larger image above. The bleed area makes sure that the colours "bleed" out over the edges when the cards are cut, instead of leaving white borders.

2Create guidelines for the bleed and safety areas. Turn on rulers (View > Rulers) and right click on the ruler to set the unit to inches. Click on the top ruler and drag down to create two horizontal guide lines, one at 0.125 in and one at 2.125 in. Create two more vertical lines at 0.125 in and 3.625 in. These lines mark the end of the actual business card. You can also create safety guidelines just inside the bleed area to make sure your text does not extend too close to the edges.

Bueller's Day Off!
Your parents are away on vacation for the week and they decided that you were responsible enough to stay home alone for the week. You decided to "borrow" their car and you got in an accident and decided to hide the car in your garage until you can get it fixed. Your neighbour calls your parents on vacation and tells them they haven't noticed the car in the driveway. Your parents call and demand a recent photo of the car, and to make sure you're not lieing, they want you to be in the photo.
Take one of the photos and photoshop out the dents/scratchs. Use the clone tool, blur tool, dodge, burn, etc. Have someone in the class take a photo of you that you can add into the photo.

Today we will start by looking at layers! Layers are an essential part of photoshop and something that needs to be used acurately. We will also explore with some of the drawing tools today to create our own graphic.
Once you are done the 2 versions of the "hamburger" you may have free time to explore the possibilities of photoshop! I would like you to look at some of the filter options in particular, but be sure to make each adjustment a separate layer and make a background copy!

After the presentation, please edit 3 photos to improve their overall quality. Take your time with this activity and achieve the best version of the photo as possible. You can use your own photos or some from google images but at least one of your edited photos must be once that you took.

Below are our ISO photos. The first photo has an ISO of 100, the second has an ISO of 1600. Keep in mind that the overall exposure did not vary too much as our setting was in "auto". I hope you all had a great weekend. Today I am going to give you a lighting demonstration in class. We will look at florescent/incandescent lighting, flash, key lighting, fill lighting, and bounce cards. Fill Lighting
After watching the demonstration and video, respond to the following on your blog:
What effect do you think lighting has on the quality of a photo?
What effect do you think lighting has on the mood of a photo?
What type of lighting did you prefer the most? Why?
After responding to the above questions you can sign out a camera with a partner/group of 3 and shoot the following:
1 photo in natural sunlight
1 photo in flurescent lighting
1 photo with the flash on in sunlight
1 photo with the flash on in flursecent lighting
2 photos with an adjusted ISO in the classroom. (The school cameras go from 80-1600 so try one from each end of the spectrum
When you are have finished taking these photos, upload them to your blog and label them.

October 11th
Hello comm techies,
Today is almost the long weekend! What I would like you to do first today finish submitting your work from yesterday:
A.)
Post the following
-3 examples of photos shot in manual setting
-1photo shot with a fast shutter speed
-1 photo shot with a slow shutter speed
-1 photo shot with a shallow DOF
-1 photo show with a deep DOF
B.)
Please respond to the following reflections:
1. Are you satisfied with how your photos turned out? Why or why not?
2. How did the fast vs slow shutter speed photos vary? Did you notice a difference

I hope you all had fun square dancing/line dancing your lunch away. Today I would like you to do the following:
1. If you STILL have not responded to the following questions from Monday, please do so:
A. What blogging experience, if any, do you have?
B. Do you generally read blogs, if so, what are they about? Find 3 examples to blogs that would interest you and post them on your blog.
C. Please answer, in 3-5 sentences, why you took this course and what you are most looking forward to.
2. If you did not finish cropping the 3 photos that I posted 2 different ways to demonstrate the rule of thirds, please do that.
3. If you have not found 2 examples of the rule of thirds, please do this also.
4. If you finished ALL the work from yesterday, I'd like you to analyse the data that is from your surveys that you sent out on Monday. I realize that you may not have everyone's responses yet, but I would still like you to do this. To do this log into your google Drive, and click on your original google form and click on view summary of responses. A page should open with a variety of pie graphs, bar graphs, etc. I would like you to choose 3 of these charts and copy and paste them to your blog. Underneath the chart, please write the question so that it is clear what the chart represents. For each chart, write a 2 sentence summary about your findings (what surprised you, what didn't surprise you).

October 7th
Good morning!
Welcome to Comm Tech. This class is going be a lot of fun! You are going to learn a lot, do a lot, and create a lot of projects that are founded in communications. Right now, you've already heard me explain the syllabus, and give you a basic idea of what communications technology is and why there is a course designed around it. What I'd like you to do next, is the following:
1. Fill out the survey that is in your Rockway Gmail account.
2. Set up your own survey using a Form in your Google Drive. The survey should be questions to find out how those around you communicate/ interact with communications technology. I will give you a demonstration in class on how to do this.
3. Create your own blog on Blogger. I will give you a demonstration on how to do this but here are some step by step directions.

Steps for setting up your blog
1. Sign into your Rockway Google Apps Account
2. Click on Blogger (it will be in a drop down menu at the top of your screen).
3. Choose a Blogger Profile (not a Google + profile).
4. Your
display name should be your first name and last initial, i.e. TraceyM
(you should unclick receive announcements to avoid annoying spam).
5. You have now created a Blogger Dashboard, this is where you can add other blogs to your reading list. Click Create new blog.
6. The title of your blog should be first name and last intial, commtech13, i.e. Traceymcommtech13
7. The address should be the same as your title.
8. Choose your layout.
9. Once you have finished this, please respond to the following:
